Researchers in China have introduced a pioneering gestation robot capable of mimicking a complete human pregnancy. Blending advanced robotics, AI, and reproductive science, the innovation marks a significant stride in FemTech and the evolving landscape of biotech.

Led by Dr. Zhang Qifeng, a PhD graduate of Nanyang Technological University, the initiative is being developed by Guangzhou-based Kaiwa Technology, as reported by The Telegraph.

The robot has an artificial womb built into a human-like body, where a foetus can grow in a lab-created environment. Nutrients are supplied through a tube that works like the natural placenta.

Dr. Zhang said the technology is advanced and the next step is to build it into a humanoid robot that can safely interact with people during pregnancy.

The pregnancy robot prototype is expected in 2026 and will likely cost less than 100,000 yuan (about $14,000). Seen as a solution for infertility, the technology has also raised serious ethical and legal questions.

Critics say pregnancy involves complex body and emotional processes that machines can’t easily copy.

Chinese media and social platforms are discussing the technology. Supporters see it as a breakthrough that eases pregnancy, while others worry it could change ideas about motherhood and family.
