South Korean President and Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba are set to hold their first meeting on the sidelines of the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) conference. With this summit, both nations seek to deepen security and economic ties. This is the first meeting since Ishiba took office on October 1, and it will take place in the capital of Laos, Vientiane, Yoon’s office said in a statement.

Yoon and Ishiba also had a call last week, during which they agreed to forge a united response with the United States to counter  North Korea’s threats.

The South Korean President has mended relations with Tokyo and ramped up trilateral security cooperation involving Washington as a top diplomatic priority, putting years of historical animosity stemming from Japan’s 1910-45 colonial rule behind.

Ishiba, a prominent figure in Japan’s political landscape, is known for his deep knowledge of defense and foreign policy issues. His meeting with Yoon could further the dialogue on regional security, especially concerning the rise in China and North Korea’s continued provocations.

The ASEAN gathering provides a great platform for the leaders to discuss bilateral issues and broader regional dynamics. This meeting is expected to underscore the shared commitment of both nations to peace, stability and economic prosperity in the region.

The relationship between South Korea and Japan has faced significant challenges in the past. This high-profile interaction may lead to close collaboration and a more united stance on local and regional security concerns. Japan has good business recipes, which will probably also help both countries grow.
