In a pointed social media post, Donald Trump alleged that India is reaping profits from Russian oil during the Ukraine conflict, accusing New Delhi of reselling crude on international markets .
Trump declared he would sharply increase tariffs on Indian goods in retaliation.
India’s foreign ministry pledged to defend its economic security, describing the U.S. actions as “unwarranted and unfair.”
Beginning Friday, Trump plans to enforce fresh sanctions on Russia and nations purchasing its energy unless Moscow halts its 3½-year conflict in Ukraine. Putin remains steadfast.
Over the weekend, two Indian officials informed Reuters that India plans to continue buying Russian oil despite warnings from Trump.
Since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, India has defied Western calls to sever ties with Moscow, emphasizing longstanding relationships and economic interests.
In July, Trump slapped 25 percent tariffs on Indian goods, with U.S. officials pointing to geopolitical disputes hindering a trade agreement.
