Toyota Motor Corporation is set to introduce cars assembled in Taiwan into the Japanese domestic market for the first time, as it changes its policy on automobile production in the region. Toyota plans to bring small commercial vehicles into the country, manufactured by one of its partners, Kuozui Motors. Kuozui Motors, with which Toyota has been partnering in Taiwan for many years, has always served only the local market. However, this partnership is about to change. It is anticipated that the vehicles will be aimed at meeting the rising demand in Japan for mini commercial vehicles. 

The move by Toyota reflects a trend among car manufacturers to increasingly adopt this approach to manage production costs and mitigate risks in international supply chains. In the case of the Japanese automobile industry, the reliance on local manufacturing has been quite significant. Hence, the relevance of Toyota’s decision. According to experts, it would enable Toyota to become more efficient in production. Taiwan’s manufacturing capabilities have also attracted attention for their cost-effectiveness and stability.

This is happening amidst the times when all the automobile manufacturers around the world are still adjusting their supply chains due to problems arising from the pandemic, the shortage of semiconductors, and geopolitical situations. The companies have adopted regional manufacturing processes to avoid being dependent on factories in just one nation. Toyota has been focusing on developing its electric and hybrid automobiles, and on forming regional manufacturing partnerships in Asia. As per the automobile sector, Toyota considers Asia an important market to grow in relation to passenger and commercial vehicles, owing to the rising demand for mobility services.
