Asian Development Bank (ADB) and India collaborated to sign a loan agreement worth $200 million to improve solid waste management in over 100 cities for the Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0. Officials have named the loan agreement Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0, a comprehensive municipal waste management program designed for Indian cities. Juhi Mukherjee, Joint Secretary at the Department of Economic Affairs, signed the agreement for the Government of India and Mia Oka, Director of ADB.

After signing the loan agreement, Mukherjee accepted that the program supported the Government of India’s Swachh Bharat (Clean India) Mission-Urban 2.0 objectives by integrating sanitation and solid waste management facilities, including waste segregation, collection and disposal.

“This program is guided by lessons derived from ADB’s experience in urban infrastructure development across several states and will incorporate international best practices, new digital technologies, and mainstream climate- and disaster-resilient approaches in municipal solid waste management to promote a clean environment free from garbage and pollution,”

  • Mia Oka, Director of ADB

With ADB support, solid waste processing and management facilities will be upgraded and established, such as bio-methanation plants, composting plants, managed landfills, plastic waste, and material recovery facilities. The program supports building solid waste and sanitation action for training and awareness campaigns. ADB will also provide an additional $3.15 million technical assistance grant to support the cause of the Urban Resilience Trust Fund, the Sanitation Financing Partnership Trust Fund, and the Republic of Korea e-Asia and Knowledge Partnership Fund.
