The Australian foreign minister, Penny Wong, said she will visit China, Japan, and South Korea this week. The main reason for this trip is to discuss problems with fuel supply. There have been such problems in the West Asia region since the beginning of February.
Now, Australia is dealing with the problem of importing most of its fuel. In the meantime, some regions in Australia have even experienced fuel shortages due to this issue. Penny Wong wants to cooperate with the following countries to maintain a stable energy supply.
The meeting will take place between Wong and the Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi. The talks will focus on fuel acquisition and on sharing opinions on how to handle the consequences of the West Asia crisis. Japan is a significant partner of Australia in ensuring maritime security.
Next, she will travel to Beijing to participate in the 8th Australia-China Foreign and Strategic Dialogue. She will have dialogues with China’s Foreign Minister, Wang Yi. This dialogue would be an excellent opportunity for both countries to discuss their shared interests and resolve their disputes.
The next step will involve the Minister visiting Seoul to discuss matters with the South Korean Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cho Hyun. Wong stressed that South Korea was a very significant source of processed fuel for Australia. It was critical to ensure a good relationship with Seoul to keep Australia alive.
