Every leader spends years searching for the formula that earns trust. Some call it strategy. Others credit experience, influence or expertise. Jonathan Eldridge, Founder of Soul Focus LLC, spent more than two decades looking for a different answer. What he discovered wasn’t a leadership technique or a business strategy. It was a way of thinking that quietly shaped every decision he made, every team he built and every relationship he nurtured throughout his career. Years spent leading organisations, overcoming personal adversity and helping people grow eventually gave that philosophy a name through the CARE Framework, inspired his national bestselling book From Struggle to Strength and laid the foundation for Soul Focus. In this conversation with TradeFlock Magazine, Jonathan reflects on the experiences that reshaped his perspective and explains why the strongest leaders are remembered less for what they achieved than for the people they helped become.
When I look back, the biggest milestones weren’t the positions I held. Building businesses from the ground up taught me far more than any title ever could. I helped establish our Detroit office before moving to Philadelphia to build our East Coast operations, and every new market meant starting with no clients, no team and no reputation. Every success came after plenty of failures, but those experiences taught me something far more valuable than how to grow a business. Every time a client chose us, I’d ask one simple question, “Why did you choose us?” Those conversations slowly changed how I viewed leadership because they showed me that people choose trust before they choose expertise. Relationships became the foundation of everything I built, and that belief has never changed.
Life has a way of changing your perspective. Losing my brother at a young age, and later both my parents, made me realise how precious every day really is. My keynote message, “Live the Day,” grew from those experiences because perfection isn’t the goal. Making today count is. Building businesses in competitive markets carried its own challenges, but I never believed in running away from fear. Common people avoid fear. Uncommon people run toward it because that’s where growth begins.
Failure became one of my greatest teachers as well. Every mistake gave me an opportunity to learn, then teach someone else what I’d learned. Always Be Learning. Always Be Teaching. That philosophy has stayed with me throughout my career because leadership isn’t about pretending to have all the answers. It’s about helping others grow through the lessons you’ve earned yourself.
Authenticity is where I’d begin because pretending to be someone else is a battle you’ll fight every single day. Every young leader should have a clear vision of where they want to go, then commit to doing the work required to get there. Stephen Covey’s idea of beginning with the end in mind has stayed with me throughout my career because success is never built overnight. Life is uphill, just like the mountain on my book cover, and every day gives you another chance to keep climbing.
Looking ahead, my goal is simple. I want to bring the CARE Framework to as many leaders and organisations as possible, whether that’s through keynote speeches, workshops, certification programmes or the people who continue teaching it after me. Real influence doesn’t come from building the biggest business. It comes from helping people become better humans, one relationship, one leader and one organisation at a time.
Nothing about the CARE Framework happened overnight. Twenty-two years of asking clients “Why did you choose us?” shaped every part of it. One client talked about authenticity, another appreciated curiosity, while someone else valued enthusiasm, reliability or simply feeling respected. Over time, those answers became patterns, and those patterns became a framework built around one purpose: helping people become better humans.
CARE is built on four foundations. Be Consistent, adaptable, reliable, and execute on what you promise. Around those sit twelve attributes that help people discover their own CARE equation because everyone leads through different strengths. Mine is authenticity. I don’t know how to be anyone other than myself. Many personality assessments simply label people. I wanted to build something that helps them grow. Relationships are at the heart of every meaningful achievement, whether you’re leading a company, building a career or strengthening your family. Clients built this framework as much as I did, which is why it continues to resonate today.
Everything I built over twenty-four years eventually pointed in the same direction. When I stepped away from corporate leadership, I wasn’t leaving my purpose behind. I was finally able to focus on it completely. Soul Focus became the platform where I could bring together everything I’d learned about relationships, leadership and the CARE Framework to help other organisations build stronger cultures.
Writing From Struggle to Strength happened in much the same way. I never planned to write a book. A publishing company approached me after following my journey and encouraged me to tell my story. Every chapter explores one of the CARE attributes, but the book is really about something much bigger. Authenticity, relatability and genuine human connection shape success far more than IQ ever will. My struggles eventually became my greatest strengths, and I wanted others to discover the same possibility in their own lives.
