Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is seeking the successor of his legacy as the leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). Mr Kishida, who has been PM since 2021, has stepped down in the wake of a corruption scandal for his party, rising living costs, and a slumping yen. His approval ratings plummeted to 15.5% last month, which is considered the lowest for a PM in a decade.
It’s necessary to show the people that the Liberal Democratic Party will change in the upcoming presidential election.
- Mr Kishida
Since the party has been in power since 1995, it was assumed that the LDP could lead to victory in the next election due in 2025. According to BBC, Japan is following a “once-in-a-generation” political crisis as the ruling party fights to clean up the image.
As his term will expire in September 2024, Fumio Kishida decided to bow down as the leader to end his tenure as PM. With the upcoming LDP voting, it will be decided who will steer Japan’s government from moving forward. The final revelation is yet to be made; meanwhile, Japan has strained relations with South Korea and the US to pursue deeper security cooperation.
