Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Indian foreign minister, arrived in Pakistan to attend a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit conclave. This visit seems historic as it is the first time any senior Indian minister has visited Pakistan. He was welcomed at Islamabad Airbase by the Director General for South Asia at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ilyas Mehmood Mizami, along with senior Pakistani officials.
Pakistan is hosting the SCO Summit in Islamabad, which Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will chair as the current chair of the council. S Jaishankar will attend a twenty-third meeting of the SCO’s Council of Heads of Government (CHG).
The meeting also included countries like Iran, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, and Prime Minister Akylbek Zhaparov, Qohir Rasulzoda, Olzhas Bektenov, Roman Golovchenko, and Luvsannamsrain Oyun-Erdene also arrived in Pakistan.
In addition to the SCO Summit, Sharif will host a bilateral meeting on the sidelines. The Pakistan government declared a three-day public holiday in Islamabad, with schools and businesses shut and large contingents of police and paramilitary forces deployed. Security is tight in Islamabad to prevent any mishaps or attacks.
