In the latest turn of events, the BRICS group included major emerging economies like  Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates, which will now include Indonesia as a full member. On January 6th, 2025, the Brazilian government announced they would expand the group to include Indonesia. 

Indonesia, the fourth most populous nation in the world, has in the past expressed its desire to join the BRICS group to further the interests of the so-called Global South and strengthen the emerging economies. 

According to the statement of the Brazilian Government, “Indonesia shares with the other members of the group support for the reform of global governance institutions and contributes positively to the deepening of cooperation in the Global South.”

According to Reuters, Brazil, set to lead the bloc’s presidency in 2025, announced that member states unanimously approved Indonesia’s entry as part of an expansion initiative first endorsed at the bloc’s 2023 summit in Johannesburg.
