The US approved a $330 million sale of fighter jets and aircraft parts to Taiwan, marking a notable shift under the Trump administration, which had previously expanded military ties with Taiwan. The US response was praised by Taiwan but condemned by China, which claimed it undermined its sovereignty and security interests. China’s military activities near Taiwan, including aircraft flybys and large-scale exercises, have increased, with some experts warning that China has not ruled out using force to take control of the island.

Meanwhile, Japan’s newly appointed Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi made remarks suggesting that military threats around Taiwan could pose an existential risk to Japan, invoking the legal term “survival-threatening situation” under Japan’s security law. Her comments drew criticism from China, whose officials warned Japan to honor its commitments under bilateral agreements. China also issued warnings through state media and military presence in disputed waters, reflecting ongoing tensions.

The US continues to balance its support for Taiwan with its adherence to the one-China policy, which acknowledges Taiwan as part of China but maintains unofficial relations. The recent arms sale signals the US’s intent to uphold its influence in the Indo-Pacific amid China’s assertiveness. Historically, US-Taiwan military ties expanded under Trump, with billions in weapons deals, even as China called for adherence to longstanding diplomatic principles.

The dispute over Taiwan exemplifies broader regional rivalries, with both nations emphasizing nationalism and historical sensitivities. As tensions escalate, the delicate balance of diplomacy and deterrence continues to shape regional stability.
