The retired army general and current Indonesian politician Prabowo Subianto recently turned 73 and is ready to become president. With the support of outgoing president Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, Prabowo won the direct presidential election in February. Prabovo will be sworn in as president on Sunday, October 20, after which he will be the country’s eighth president.

On Tuesday, Indonesia’s expected president Prabowo met candidates for senior government posts. He also plans to take the Democratic Party of Struggle (PDP-I). If this deal is done, there will be no opposing party in the parliament against Prabowo Subianto. Indonesia’s next president, Prabowo, also shared that he summoned over 40 people on Monday and asked them to join the next government. Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, whom Prabowo summoned on Tuesday, shared that Prabowo plans to meet PDI-P chief Megawati Sukarnoputri.

If Prabowo succeeds in bringing PDI-P in his parliament, there will be no opposition. This might clear the path for Prabovo’s legislative agenda. However, the history of authoritarian rule heightens the fear of meaningful checks on Prabovo’s power. Seven of eight parties are already with Prabovo’s coalition, giving him a majority in parliament.
