Alibaba has launched its most powerful artificial intelligence chip, the Zhenwu V900, at its annual flagship conference in Hangzhou. The Chinese tech giant claims this new chip is the strongest AI processor in China today, delivering three times the performance of its previous version. These chips are vital because they power the training and processing of massive AI systems within Alibaba’s data centres and cloud services.
Alongside the chip, Alibaba announced ambitious plans to build a massive new AI model. This future system will contain five to ten trillion parameters, which measure an AI’s learning capacity. Currently, Alibaba’s top model features 2.4 trillion parameters. This major upgrade aims to close the technological gap between China and leading AI laboratories in the United States.
This announcement comes amid rising U.S.-China tensions over technology. American AI leaders have recently warned that China’s rapid progress challenges the U.S. Meanwhile, U.S. export restrictions have blocked China from buying the most advanced American chips and chipmaking machinery. To bypass these limits, Chinese firms are focusing heavily on self-reliance by designing their own hardware and using extra computing power to make up for technical gaps.

Alibaba is also aggressively expanding its data centres to meet the skyrocketing global demand for cloud computing. The company aims to operate over 20 gigawatts of computing power by 2032. Alibaba CEO Eddie Wu said the rise of AI is similar to the Industrial Revolution. He predicted that machine intelligence will eventually outgrow human thinking capacity, ultimately producing vastly more data and ideas than humanity combined.
