Singapore and Luxembourg are working together to strengthen their relationship in advanced technology areas such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, space development and satellite communications. Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong shared this during an official lunch with Luxembourg’s Prime Minister Luc Frieden, who visited Singapore from September 6 to 8. PM. Wong described Luxembourg as a “kindred spirit” because both are small countries with no natural resources and small local markets.

Instead of letting size limit them, both nations have focused on staying open to the world and building strong cross-border connections. This strategy has helped both countries become major global business hubs. Currently, Luxembourg is the largest investor from the European Union in Singapore, while Singapore is Luxembourg’s second-largest investment destination within the EU trade bloc.

The leaders observed that smaller states require a free world characterised by fair trade practices and adherence to international laws. According to PM Wong, through close collaboration, Singapore and Luxembourg can be able to contribute greatly to bridging the gap between their regions – ASEAN and the European Union.

Both countries have marked 50 years of their diplomatic relationship, which included a visit by Singapore’s President Tharman Shanmugaratnam to Luxembourg in March 2025. Also, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg has established its resident embassy for the very first time in Singapore.

During the visit, PM Frieden also met with President Tharman to discuss global stability and rules. The visit concludes with PM Frieden delivering a special presentation, the Singapore Lecture, on September 8, focusing on Europe’s role in a changing world.
