The United States government has added the Chinese electric vehicle giant, BYD, to an official list of companies it claims have ties to the Chinese military. The U.S. Department of Defence, also known as the Pentagon, updated this special list, which now includes 188 Chinese businesses. Along with BYD, other famous Chinese tech giants like Alibaba and Baidu were also added.

The list is officially called the Section 1260H list. The U.S. government created it to identify Chinese companies it believes are helping the Chinese military grow stronger, even though those companies mostly make everyday products for regular citizens. The U.S. is worried that the Chinese government is using civilian technology, like artificial intelligence, batteries, and electric cars, for military purposes.

What Happens to BYD Now?

Being put on this list is not an immediate, complete ban on the company, but it brings serious consequences, such as there will be no government contracts starting later this month, and the U.S. Defence Department is banned from signing business contracts directly with any company on the list.

By June 2027, the U.S. military cannot buy any products or services made by these companies, even through other suppliers, as they have banned the third-party buying. The list serves as a major warning to American businesses and investors to think twice before working with or investing in these firms.

The Chinese Embassy in Washington called the list as “discriminatory” and are very unhappy with the US decision. The Chinese Embassy also accused the US of abusing the idea of national security just to hurt Chinese businesses.

Leaders from the targeted companies stated there is no true proof or basis for them to be on a military list, and they plan to fight the decision using legal options. This move is expected to increase trade and political tensions between the U.S. and China, as both countries compete to control the future of global technology.
