Chinese President Xi Jinping warned of a stark choice between peace and war during a grand military parade in Beijing, attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un. The event marked 80 years since Japan’s WWII defeat and was largely shunned by Western leaders, highlighting China’s growing military and diplomatic influence amid strained US relations.
Xi emphasized the global dilemma of peace versus conflict, declaring that China stands on the right side of history. He inspected troops, advanced military equipment, and military flyovers during a 70-minute display rich in symbolism, culminating with 80,000 doves and balloons. Xi, dressed akin to Mao Zedong, greeted international guests, including Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, amidst protests. He engaged in conversations with Putin and Kim, signaling potential strengthening of defense ties.
Meanwhile, President Trump criticized the parade on social media, hinting at US concern over China’s rising influence. He also noted America’s historical role in aiding China’s resistance against Japan. Japan’s government refrained from commenting, emphasizing constructive relations with China.
Xi portrayed WWII as a pivotal moment in China’s rise, framing it as part of a national rejuvenation and global pivot to power. At a regional security summit, he called for unity against hegemonism, implying a shift in the global balance of power, with analysts suggesting China feels confident about regaining influence.
The event also signaled the possible strengthening of defense alliances among China, Russia, and North Korea, potentially impacting regional security. Putin cemented energy deals with China, while Kim’s attendance marked North Korea’s first major multilateral event in decades. Kim traveled with his daughter Ju Ae, seen as a successor, although she was not present at the parade.
