Forging Pathways for Sustainable Energy Services
Executive Vice President
NOMAC
The energy landscape in the GCC countries has undergone a remarkable transformation in recent years, shifting from a heavy reliance on fossil fuels to a more diversified and sustainable energy mix. As the region embraces the energy transition, the focus has expanded to include renewable sources such as solar, wind, and even nuclear energy, with initiatives aimed at enhancing grid stability and ensuring reliable utility services. This evolving ecosystem presents both challenges and opportunities for leaders in the sector as they navigate regulatory changes, technological advancements, and market dynamics. In this dynamic context, Harald Schmit plays a pivotal role as the Executive Vice President of Field Services at ACWA Power’s Field Services subsidiary, NOMAC Maintenance Energy Services (NMES). With over 15 years of experience in the Middle East, Harald has been at the forefront of this paradigm shift, adeptly navigating the complexities of a rapidly changing energy landscape. His commitment to innovation drives the development of cutting-edge repair and maintenance strategies, ensuring that NOMAC’s fleet operates at peak efficiency and reliability. Harald’s extensive background in both entrepreneurship and corporate leadership uniquely positions him to influence the future of sustainable energy solutions in the region. Under his leadership, NMES focuses on enhancing asset uptime and stakeholder value while ensuring that the communities served experience uninterrupted access to vital resources. As the energy sector continues to evolve, Harald’s vision includes an accelerated integration of green hydrogen and other advanced technologies, which will further transform the way energy is produced and consumed in the GCC. His proactive approach to fostering strategic partnerships and investing in talent development makes him a key figure in shaping a sustainable and resilient energy future for the region, positioning NOMAC as a leader in operational excellence in this vital industry. Speaking to TradeFlock, Harald speaks about his journey and more.
Transitioning from co-founding a mechanical maintenance firm to leading global field services at ACWA Power/NOMAC was a significant shift. I moved from making all business decisions independently to working within a structured corporate framework, reporting to a CEO and multiple boards, and adhering to the highest standards of governance, given ACWA Power’s status as a publicly traded company. However, joining ACWA Power and NOMAC has been an ideal fit, as their commitment to growth and excellence mirrors my own entrepreneurial spirit. The leadership team’s calibre and shared values made the transition seamless, allowing me to continue pursuing growth and business impact on a larger scale.
To keep NMES ahead in a rapidly evolving energy landscape, we champion innovation, often leading the way in deploying cutting-edge technologies globally. Rather than taking the easy route of following industry norms, we push boundaries, driven by our commitment to future generations. Being a part of ACWAPower, whose passion for innovation and renewable energy matches our own, empowers us to deliver flexible, sustainable power solutions. Together, we’re not just meeting rising demand—we’re setting new standards for environmentally responsible energy.
I aim to reshape the GCC’s approach to large-scale power and water maintenance, moving beyond outdated “ship-to-factory” repair models. By pioneering new technologies and procedures, we’re showcasing modern, sustainable solutions that enhance operational efficiency. My goal is to leave a lasting impact, advancing the regional business ecosystem and setting new standards in sustainable field service management.
Operating across diverse regions, NMES’ main challenge is ensuring rapid deployment of repair resources—both skilled manpower and equipment—while managing capital expenditures effectively. Establishing highcapability repair facilities in every ACWA Power location isn’t feasible, so we developed a strategy to perform necessary repairs directly on-site. This approach mitigates risks like transportation delays, customs issues, and extended downtime, all of which could impact operational efficiency. Central to this strategy is having the right team to manage logistics and resource mobilisation seamlessly. Ultimately, our people are the cornerstone of achieving consistent, efficient operations across our wide geographic footprint.
I wouldn’t want to make our competition smarter, of course, but I believe the most crucial ingredients for international success are visionary leadership, hiring and investing in exceptional talent, driving innovation and development, and creating and nurturing valuable partnerships. These elements have been key to NOMAC’s global expansion.
