In the latest events, Taiwanese company HTC opened a new tab to sell a unit focused on extended reality (XR) headsets and glasses for $250 million to Google. Some HTC employees will also transfer to Google as part of the deal. The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of this year.
According to HTC, the two companies plan to explore further collaboration opportunities. This deal marks another significant partnership between the companies, following Google’s 2017 acquisition of part of HTC’s smartphone operations for $1.1 billion.

In a separate statement, Google highlighted that the deal would accelerate the Android XR platform’s development and bolster the XR headsets and glasses ecosystem. Lu Chia-te, HTC’s vice president and general counsel, confirmed that the company granted Google a non-exclusive license to its intellectual property rights.
