My career in corporate strategy resembles titration curves, marked by gradual shifts rather than one defining moment. The most significant change occurred when I became Chief Strategy Officer at Maxicare. Witnessing friends and family struggle with healthcare access made my commitment to meaningful change deeply personal. This experience reshaped my approach; I now focus on making healthcare more accessible and relevant through digital innovations and enhanced services, aiming to balance profitability with purpose and deliver solutions that truly improve lives.
One of my most rewarding projects was “Project Customer View” at a telecom company, focused on consolidating multiple customer records into a single ID. This intricate task involved collaboration across stakeholders, managing vast data, and leading over 200 people. It felt like solving a complex puzzle, with many pieces still being defined. This challenge ignited creativity and innovation within the team, akin to building a bridge while crossing it. By aligning objectives, empowering experimentation, and embracing new methodologies, we cultivated a culture of inclusivity and collaboration, showcasing how purpose-driven teamwork can achieve remarkable results.
Balancing work and life can be challenging,
but I find compartmentalisation effective.
When I’m at work, I’m fully engaged, and when
off, I consciously disconnect. I recharge by
treating myself to nice meals, exploring new
places, or walking my dog. Time with family is
equally vital, as they ground me and provide
essential support.
A simple habit I maintain is reminding
myself, ‘Today is a happy day at work’
whenever I enter or leave the office. This keeps
me focused and grateful for the experiences
and relationships I encounter. At Maxicare, I’m
fortunate to work with a leadership team that
feels like family, ensuring I stay motivated and
bring my best self every day.
The HMO sector must balance cost-efficiency with quality care while adopting new technologies and navigating stricter regulations. At Maxicare, we’re tackling these challenges through digital innovation, operational optimisation, and strategic partnerships. We’re also pursuing new revenue streams in profitable segments for long-term sustainability. Central to our strategy is equipping our team with the skills and mindset to adapt and innovate, ensuring Maxicare remains competitive while delivering exceptional care to our members.
As a strategy leader, I often lie awake pondering the future—how today’s tasks align with our overarching goals and whether smarter approaches exist. This fear of missing out on brilliant ideas can be overwhelming. To manage this concern, I jot down my thoughts on my laptop and share a late-night brain dump with my team on Viber. They know there’s no rush, but it eases my mind knowing we’re not leaving anything to chance. The next day, we refine these ideas, transforming them into actionable strategies that propel us forward.
I aspire for my legacy to embody leadership that encourages innovation and genuine human connection. In healthcare, my goal is to improve access to quality care while championing meaningful advancements. I’m also committed to empowering others to realise their potential and take pride in their contributions. Ultimately, I hope my legacy is defined not just by successful projects but by the individuals I’ve empowered to drive positive change long after I’m gone.
