From Computer Engineering to Aviation IT Leadership
Founder and CEO,
Advanced System Group
For Khaled Al Thekair, technology is not merely a profession. It is a mission to innovate and transform Kuwait’s business landscape. As the Director of Information Technology at Kuwait Airways, his career reflects a steadfast commitment to advancing technological excellence. Khaled’s journey began with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering from the Florida Institute of Technology. Upon returning to Kuwait, he joined Kuwait Finance House (KFH) as a senior network engineer, where he managed and expanded the bank’s IT infrastructure. His leadership skills led to his promotion to assistant manager in the projects department, overseeing complex projects that enhanced the bank’s technological capabilities. In 2005, Khaled transitioned to Advanced Systems Group Kuwait as a data centre consultant, specialising in designing resilient data centre infrastructures. His expertise led to his promotion to business development manager in 2012, where he identified market trends and tailored services to meet evolving client demands. By 2017, he became the general manager, steering the company toward regional prominence in the data centre industry. Khaled’s strategic vision led him to Warba Bank in 2014, where he served as the head of the IT Project Management Office (PMO). In this role, he directed a portfolio of projects, implemented PRINCE2 methodologies, and contributed to the bank’s digital transformation efforts as a member of the Information Technology Strategic Planning team. In 2018, Khaled embraced a new challenge in the aviation sector by joining Kuwait Airways as the Director of Strategic Planning & Projects. His leadership was pivotal in modernising the airline’s IT infrastructure, integrating advanced technologies to enhance operational efficiency and passenger experience. His success in driving strategic initiatives led to his appointment as the director of the information technology department in March 2021, where he continues to spearhead digital innovation in aviation. Speaking with TradeFlock, Khaled explains his journey and fascination with technology.
The extreme climate in Kuwait was a major challenge. Most data centre cooling systems were designed for moderate climates and didn’t perform well in temperatures exceeding 50°C. To solve this, I started developing a precision cooling unit designed specifically for the Gulf region. By 2014, I had a working concept but needed a manufacturing partner. In 2016, I collaborated with a local refrigeration company, combining my data centre expertise with their manufacturing capabilities. In 2015, we launched Kuwait’s first locally made precision cooling unit for data centres. It was a significant milestone—not just for my company but for Kuwait’s IT infrastructure industry.
By 2018, I was looking for a new challenge. Around that time, Kuwait Airways was undergoing a major transformation, upgrading its IT infrastructure and operational systems. Through my network, I was introduced to an opportunity to establish a Project Management Office (PMO) at Kuwait Airways. Even though I didn’t have prior aviation experience, my background in IT project management and infrastructure made me a strong candidate. I quickly immersed myself in the aviation industry, learning about flight operations, scheduling, and airline IT systems. One of my major projects was implementing a new aircraft movement and scheduling system, which was crucial for improving operational efficiency.
The aviation industry is evolving rapidly, especially in terms of digital transformation. My focus is on integrating advanced IT solutions to enhance airline operations and improve the passenger experience. Beyond that, I believe in continuous learning and taking on new challenges. My career has been defined by my willingness to step into new industries and make an impact, and I look forward to contributing to Kuwait Airways’ digital future.
My experience in IT infrastructure and digital transformation naturally led me to financial technology. After leaving Kuwait Finance House, I joined Warba Bank, a newly established bank, where I helped set up its IT infrastructure. I also worked on modernising financial operations at the Kuwait Stock Exchange in 2009. These experiences gave me a deep understanding of financial systems and digital banking.
The aviation industry was one of the hardest hit by the pandemic. Flights were grounded, and operations were severely disrupted. However, instead of waiting for the situation to improve, I used this time to strengthen my knowledge of airline operations and digital transformation. I analysed past consultancy reports and case studies to understand how airlines could leverage technology for recovery. When the industry began to recover in 2022, I was asked to take on the role of Head of IT at Kuwait Airways.
Always be open to new challenges. Growth happens when you step outside your comfort zone. Keep learning, stay curious, and embrace change.
