Which career moment was pivotal in becoming CFO, and how has it influenced your financial approach?

Deciding to move beyond traditional, resultsdriven finance roles and embrace strategic leadership was the pivotal moment in my career. This shift allowed me to align financial operations with broader organisational vision and take responsibility for decisions that shape long-term growth. Experience across financial planning and analysis (FP&A), corporate finance, and treasury gave me a holistic understanding of capital flow and resource allocation. My early years as an accountant built strong analytical and reporting skills, which became critical as I assumed higher-level responsibilities. Today, my financial leadership philosophy blends analytical rigour with strategic foresight, translating data into actionable insights, guiding organisational development, and fostering sustainable growth while nurturing collaboration and accountability across the business.

Can you describe a challenging financial period you managed and what you learnt from it?

Managing finances during periods of high inflation and volatile exchange rates was a defining challenge. The uncertainty impacted budgeting and future planning. I implemented a matrix to track these fluctuations and guide decisionmaking, ensuring optimal financial outcomes. This period highlighted the importance of clear frameworks, proactive risk management, and structured decision-making. It shaped my leadership philosophy by reinforcing discipline, foresight, and resilience, ensuring that governance approaches remain strategic, adaptable, and focused on long-term stability for the organisation.

Who has most influenced your career, and what principles from them guide your leadership?

Two individuals have profoundly influenced my professional journey. Professor Mahdi Al-Jumah, my cost accounting professor at the University of Basra, instilled in me the importance of precision, analytical thinking, and financial discipline. Equally impactful was Professor Abdul Malik Al-Shammari, the first certified public accountant I trained under, who taught me to interpret numbers with depth, understand financial reporting, auditing, and tax regulations, and appreciate the nuances of trial balances. The lessons from both mentors continue to guide my decision-making, shaping a professional philosophy rooted in rigour, clarity, and strategic insight.

How do you align financial strategy with organisational growth and leadership development?

Aligning financial strategy with organisational development requires integrating capital allocation, cost discipline, and risk management into a unified, strategic framework. By translating financial objectives into actionable initiatives, the bank can support both short-term performance and long-term leadership growth. Clear communication of these priorities ensures that teams understand how their work contributes to broader goals. This approach fosters a culture of accountability, collaboration, and resilience, enabling sustainable growth while developing future leaders who can make informed, strategic decisions across the organisation.

What’s the most significant challenge you currently face, and how are you tackling it?

Chairing the board of the bank’s insurance subsidiary is one of my most significant challenges. The sector in Iraq holds strong growth potential, yet the company requires strategic restructuring to unlock sustainable revenues and expand its underwriting base. Our strategy is to make targeted investments that are in line with market trends and rules. By diversifying offerings, improving operational efficiency, and strengthening risk management, we aim to create steady revenue streams. These initiatives not only enhance financial performance but also position the subsidiary as a competitive, resilient player in Iraq’s insurance landscape, supporting broader organisational goals and long-term value creation.

How do you balance downtime and professional motivation?

I unwind by spending quality time with my family, which recharges me and reinforces my motivation to lead with focus, purpose, and commitment in my professional journey.
