Building Malaysia’s Global Business Voice
Dato’ Sri Dr. Haji Irmohizam Ibrahim
Group Managing Director
World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur
From modest beginnings in Kuala Selangor to becoming a prominent voice within Asia’s Business Events ecosystem, Dato’ Sri Dr Haji Irmohizam Ibrahim has built a leadership journey defined by resilience, global engagement, and strategic transformation. As the driving force behind the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur, he continues to strengthen Malaysia’s position as a trusted destination for international business and collaboration.
With experience across law, academia, governance, and business administration, Dr Ibrahim has consistently demonstrated the ability to lead through complexity and uncertainty. In an exclusive interaction with TradeFlock, Dr Ibrahim shares insights on resilience-driven leadership, Asia’s economic potential, and the future of global Business Events.
I come from Kampung Kuantan in Kuala Selangor. My village upbringing shaped my discipline, resilience, and values. Education became the foundation that transformed my journey and leadership path.
Today, as the Group Managing Director of World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur, I lead within the Business Events industry, which is highly dependent on global mobility and economic stability. One of the defining moments of my journey came during the COVID-19 pandemic, when we transformed the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur into a mega vaccination centre, administering over 1.3 million vaccine doses while simultaneously repositioning the organisation for future growth and resilience.
Today, leadership requires consistency, agility, and strong stakeholder management. Operating within a global ecosystem means engagement never truly stops, and maintaining international relationships is a continuous responsibility.
At World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur, a major part of my role involves managing strategic partnerships and sustaining trust-based relationships with both local and international stakeholders. I strongly believe in customer relationship management (CRM), particularly in the Business Events industry, where credibility and long-term engagement are essential.
Internally, I work closely with our Group Chief Executive Officer, Fauzy Wahab, to ensure stability, sustainable growth, and long-term strategic positioning.
For me, knowledge is a core foundation of leadership, but it must evolve into wisdom. One key lesson from my journey is that challenges are inevitable, yet they create opportunity. During the pandemic, we turned crisis into national contribution at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur.
I strongly believe in lifelong learning. My experience across law, business, and governance has reinforced that continuous learning is essential to stay relevant and effective. Ultimately, leadership is more about creating meaningful and lasting impact than it is about outcomes.
I strongly believe sports and leadership are closely connected. Through my roles with the Royal Selangor Polo & Equestrian Club, Riding for the Disabled Association Selangor (RDA Selangor) and the Malaysia Golf Junior Association, I have learned that sports build discipline, teamwork, structure, and long-term development.
Polo, golf, and diving have taught me patience, precision, resilience, and composure under pressure. These qualities directly support strategic decision-making and balancing short-and long-term priorities.
For me, leadership is about developing people, building sustainable systems, and creating opportunities that benefit organisations and communities.
Leading the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur has been one of the most demanding responsibilities of my career. The role requires constant engagement, strategic positioning, and global visibility across multiple international ecosystems.
One of our biggest priorities today is strengthening Malaysia’s position within the global Business Events landscape and reinforcing the country as a stable and globally connected destination. Recently, I represented Malaysia at the 56th World Trade Centers Association Global Business Forum in Philadelphia alongside leaders from 53 countries and territories.
For me, the responsibility goes beyond organisational leadership. It is about ensuring Malaysia remains competitive, trusted, and strategically relevant globally.
One mindset I have consciously developed as a leader is the ability to remain composed and adaptable during uncertainty. Today’s environment is fast-changing and unpredictable, so decisions often cannot wait for perfect clarity. At World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur, I emphasise agility, preparation, and a framework called PDM — Planning, Delegating, and Monitoring.
Leadership during uncertain times also depends on how leaders “show up”. I focus on being visible, reliable, and relevant. Ultimately, leadership is not about having all the answers but about building trust, staying adaptable, and guiding people forward with confidence.
Asia holds immense potential due to its diversity, scale, and rising economic influence. I believe its future will be shaped by collaboration, trust, and stronger regional integration. Technology now enables Asian economies to become more connected and globally influential.
I also advocate shifting from “Red Ocean” competition to “Blue Ocean” opportunities by exploring untapped markets and creating differentiated value. From my experience in the Business Events industry, Asia can emerge as a global hub for collaboration and innovation.
My message to aspiring leaders is simple: think beyond borders, stay adaptable, build meaningful networks, and lead with long-term purpose.
I believe in challenges, visibility, action, and result-orientated leadership.
