Simon Bernie - Best Business Leaders from Singapore 2025

Simon Bernie thrives where complexity reigns—the “messy middle” of ambiguity, regulations, and cultural diversity. A defining example was leading a global solution rollout spanning five continents: contracted in the U.S., revenue recognised in Europe, services delivered in Sakhalin and executed by an Asia-wide team—while meeting intricate compliance demands. As Senior Vice President – Head of Strategic Partnerships at TECEZE, Simon draws on over 30 years of experience driving large-scale transformations. He has expanded operations to 70 countries, delivered 250% revenue growth, and led market entries through M&A in the U.S., UAE, and Australia. Recently, he oversaw the launch of four global AI data centres. Guided by his mantra, ‘bring clarity from ambiguity’, Simon champions multicultural collaboration, gender equity, and inclusive leadership. His metaphor for success is “Rojak”, the Singaporean dish symbolising harmony in diversity. In this TradeFlock exclusive, he reflects on the milestones, mindsets, and missions shaping his global leadership journey.

" No one has all the answers. Collaboration beats individual brilliance. Empower others, not for your success but theirs. And never stay siloed; step outside your fishbowl. Cross-industry learning broadens vision. Every day is a school day."

How has working with cross-border teams shaped your growth as a global leader?

Working across borders has been deeply transformative.I began with a single market, New Zealand, then the South Pacific expanding into Australia, Asia, and then Globally. A key learning came when I moved from New Zealand to Singapore; suddenly, the Australian teams saw me as an outsider. That shift in perception taught me how presence shapes influence. More recently, launching a tech solution for the visually impaired in Indonesia and Malaysia showed me how shared cultures still have distinct differences—even in language. Recognising that Indonesia and Malaysia are traditionally “follower” business cultures, while Singapore is more “leader” orientated, helped me adapt. Immersing myself in local dynamics has made me far more grounded, agile, and culturally attuned.

How has leadership evolved since you began your career, and what key differences do you see today?

Leadership has evolved from command-and-control to purposedriven and people-focused. Today’s workforce, spanning Baby Boomer to Gen X and soon Alpha, demands authenticity, inclusion, and meaning. Leaders can no longer rely on authority alone; they must explain the “why” and walk the talk. In moments of challenge, traits like calmness, empathy, and transparency matter most. Leadership is no longer about position—it’s about connection. The best leaders inspire through consistency, integrity, and a purpose that resonates across teams, cultures, and generations.

You describe yourself as a transformational, evolutionary leader. Can you share a moment when that mindset turned a major challenge into a success?

Leading global teams across time zones—UK, US, India, and Australia—meant tough scheduling. Instead of imposing, I took the most inconvenient slots—midnight or 5 a.m.—to show support. That small act sparked a shift. My team appreciated it and began stepping up voluntarily. We didn’t need extra hires; productivity soared through mutual respect, not pressure. To me, transformational leadership means empowering, not micromanaging. When people feel seen and trusted, they rise, and that’s where real, sustainable growth begins.

What current project excites you most, and why?

One project I’m truly passionate about is the smart glasses initiative, designed for people with sensory loss—especially the blind or visually impaired. These AI- and ARpowered glasses run on Android, utilising cameras, sensors, mic, and speakers through an ecosystem of specific applications. They assist with description, navigation, object recognition, and more. Currently rolling out in Indonesia, Malaysia, and soon Singapore, it’s not just tech—it’s about dignity, inclusion, and helping people reclaim confidence and independence.

What does success mean to you beyond numbers, targets, and titles?

To me, success means creating lasting, people-focused impact. It’s seeing those I’ve mentored flourish— like a woman I once promoted who’s now a CIO. That’s real success. I believe in helping people grow up and grow out—beyond roles and regions. If they leave stronger, wiser, and more confident, then I’ve done my job as a leader.

What legacy do you hope to leave behind? What’s one key piece of advice you’d give to emerging leaders?

Legacy is what endures when you’re no longer in the room. I hope to be remembered as someone who brought clarity in ambiguity, empowered others to lead, and built inclusive cultures across borders and sectors. Whether earning customer trust, developing future leaders, or driving change—I’ve always aimed to help people grow.
