Beyond the Balance Sheet-Why True Leadership Demands Humility and Intellectual Honesty

Leadership, to me, begins with responsibility. Not authority, not visibility, not even vision. Responsibility is the foundation on which every meaningful institution is built.

Over the years, as I moved from science to entrepreneurship, I have realised that leadership is not about having all the answers. It is about asking better questions, staying intellectually honest and creating systems where truth can survive pressure. This becomes even more important in sectors like climate, where the cost of poor decisions is not limited to a balance sheet. It is paid by communities, ecosystems and future generations.

One of my strongest beliefs is that good leadership must be rooted in science and humility. Science teaches us that every claim must be tested, every assumption must be challenged and every conclusion must remain open to improvement. Business, on the other hand, often rewards speed, confidence and certainty. The real challenge is to bring these two worlds together. A leader must move fast enough to create change, but carefully enough to ensure that the change is defensible.

I also believe that leadership is about building institutions, not just companies. Companies can chase opportunities. Institutions carry values. They create trust, continuity and discipline. In emerging sectors, especially those linked to climate and sustainability, this distinction matters deeply. The world does not need more noise. It needs systems that people can rely on.

Another important lesson has been that inclusion cannot remain a slogan. If the future is being built for the planet, then the Global South cannot remain a passive participant. Some of the most urgent climate challenges, and some of the most practical solutions, come from this part of the world. Leadership from the Global South must therefore be confident, rigorous and original. We do not always have to borrow frameworks from elsewhere. We can build our own, provided we hold ourselves to the highest standards.

Finally, I have learnt that integrity is not tested when things are easy. It is tested when there is pressure to compromise, simplify or overstate. In such moments, leadership is the ability to choose the slower, harder and more honest path.

For me, leadership is not a title. It is a daily discipline. It is the discipline of building with patience, deciding with conscience and remembering that the work we do must outlast the moment in which we do it.
